Doctor Turin is working on a new perfume guide book that comes out next year. To say I'm looking forward to reading this book is the understatement of 2007. His legendary 1994 book, Le Guide, put him on the perfume map, as it were. This one will probably send it into orbit.
In his latest NZZ Folio magazine article, he writes about the sheer ecstasy of reviewing perfumes for the upcoming book, receiving box after box of perfumes and having his collection double to about 1400 bottles—and it's early days yet!
By the way, he likes Amouage Gold (“fabulous”; “once the most expensive fragrance in the world”) and calls Chanel's No. 5 Eau de Parfum an “eighties lapse of judgment.” Keep in mind that the No. 5 Parfum is the original 1921 original, and the Eau de Toilette version is “soft and peachy, a fifties mom in a fur coat coming to tuck you in bed before going to the theatre.”
